The Graduate School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill offers many fellowships and awards to support doctoral and master’s degree students in disciplines across the campus. Recipients of these fellowships and awards are selected through a competitive application process requiring volunteer faculty reviewers to evaluate the merits of each applicant and help select the winners. Retired Faculty represent a unique pool of talented individuals with the experience and expertise necessary to serve as fellowship applicant reviewers. These fellowships and awards include:
- Recruitment fellowships to help graduate programs across campus attract their best applicants,
- Dissertation fellowships to enable students to focus and make progress over a summer or to complete their dissertations,
- Bland fellowships that give students a summer to explore future career paths beyond the professoriate,
- Interdisciplinary fellowships to enable students to explore urban livability concepts and applications together for one academic year,
- Four annual awards recognizing the best dissertation at UNC Chapel Hill in various areas of research/study,
- Annual awards recognizing research of significance to North Carolina and basic research that shows most promise for high impact in the future, and
- Preselection of students to represent Carolina in external, national competitions.
