Help a student prisoner
The Correctional Education Program (CEP) at the Friday Center offers for-credit UNC-CH courses to students in prison, in both correspondence and face-to-face form. The CEP is seeking volunteers to serve as academic mentors to provide support to students through the mail.
Mentors would be assigned a correspondence student and write monthly check-in letters to the student as well as possibly reviewing the student’s academic work, offering feedback on how the student is approaching the course and helping them devise strategies for achieving success in their academic pursuits. All student/mentor communication will go through the Friday Center via email. Opportunities are also available for on-site mentoring or teaching courses on site (via paid positions).
A short film about the program can be viewed at this link.
If you are interested in the program in any way, please contact CEP’s associate director, Raphael Ginsberg, at trapido@email.unc.edu.
